The Hamden Regional Youth Basketball League has created a scholarship fund in honor of Paul Carr. Paul was a former Basketball Commissioner and Coach in the HRYBL. In December 2008 Paul passed away after a long and hard fought battle with ALS, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease. Here’s what you should know about Paul Carr. He was humble, yet always determined in his efforts. Paul embodied the selfless traits of a dedicated teammate when he participated on his high school basketball team. He was a workhorse in practice; he pushed his teammates to their limits; he was an effective player off the bench, who could hit the key shot or free throw down the stretch. These are the traits he most valued as a coach at the HRYBL; teamwork, striving to get his players to always improve; commitment and always trying to do one’s best. When diagnosed with ALS he continued to be a great leader and was instrumental in raising over $200,000 for ALS. Even in illness, Paul contributed selflessly. Congratulations to the recipient of this Award who is now and forever bound to the legacy of Paul’s Great Spirit.
CRITERIA: Awards to be made annually. Any young man or woman may apply who participated in the HRYBL. Acceptance from an accredited two or four year college program. Demonstrated Sportsmanship and Community involvement.
